The Role Modelling Event

Dr. Mrs. Blessing Okogbue says, there's a lot to be done to develop agriculture so as to make food available, affordable and create jobs to engage the jobless especially the restive youths and the rural people.
We need to think and approach Agriculture/Agribusiness from a multidisciplinary perspective and also raise Agro-based businessmen & women (Entrepreneurs) if we want to be self-sufficient.

Role Modelling Event of Dr. Mrs. B. C. Okogbue

As an AWARD fellow, Dr. Blessing has been empowered to influence, lead and bring about change. She is expected to impart her generation, share acquired knowledge and creative ideas to move the world/Nigeria forward via a forum. This the African Women in Agricultural Research & Development (AWARD) calls, a ROLE MODELLING EVENT.

She thinks Agriculture has been relegated in Nigeria for so long which has resulted to untold hardship for the citizens. She feels Agriculture should be given a good facial lift. Yes, the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Adesina has done quite alot but she feels more should be done to boost agriculture in Nigeria.

She therefore calls for a forum to give a sensitization lecture she titled; "Think Agriculture". She believes all hands should be on deck and every profession on board for Agriculture to move to the next level.
She thinks Agriculture should be tackled from a Multidisciplinary perspective, where every professional creatively thinks on how to tailor his discipline to support agric. development. She is using this opportunity to invite you to participate at the event. Be there!!

MENTORING

Mentoring:

Mentoring = teaching (lecturing) + coaching + role modelling + passion (enthusiasm).

“The best way to get to a place completely new and strange to one is to ask those that have been there for direction”, very important, it enhances speed. The bottom line about mentoring.

Growing crops and veges in wetlands

Places located in the Niger delta areas are characterized by high water table, protracted rainfall, moist soils and water logging. Notwithstanding, it is imperative that strategies to face these challenges be put in place to encourage crop production instead of the massive importation of vegetables and other crops into the city from neighboring states.
Bayelsa being a coastal city, is surrounded by water and most lands polluted by oil activities. This polluting activities also affect the water bodies thereby hampering fishing activities.

Dr. Blessing Okogbue is working towards an agricultural sensitization lecture to educate the people and expose some level of truth in the possibility of full agricultural activities in the riverine state not minding the wetness of the terrain.

A lot of youths are jobless, idle and also complain that jobs are not available. If the little available lands can be cultivated, lots of food can be produced by the state and a lot of willing young people can be engaged productively.

Please add your comments on crops that can thrive in a typical Bayelsan soil. Thank you

Agric-based Recearches: Very important in universities and colleges of agriculture

We could give it a fair trial to see how it works and the impact it can create.
Giving every department in our agrio-based institutions room for innovative involvement to tailor their professions towards solving agro-based problems and tackling issues related to agricultural value chain development. Think about it! How do you mean?

Hands-on multi-disciplinary approach to Agricultural development

Agriculture should not be left for farmers alone, all hands just have to be on deck if Nigeria wants Agriculture to move to the next level. The NEXT LEVEL here is the point where Nigeria is self-sufficient in food production and poised enough to produce substantial raw materials for industrial development. This way the poor will have access to 'daily bread' and most SMEs will have cheap and indigenous raw materials to boost business and promote 'made-in-Nigeria' goods and services. This is simple, let every profession device a means to apply tailored technology to boost agricultural activities.

Yes! if engineers, technologists and technicians will look inwards and be committed to this cause, indigenous technological designs which fast track production, processing and preservation of agric. produce can be developed. It will help cut high costs involved in importation of equipment and post harvest losses incurred due to lack of necessary equipment.
Marketing and distribution of agric. products can be enhanced if business and marketing experts will pay little attention and come up with strategic ideas.

Banks and financial institutions need to come up with ways to help small holders and rural farmers manage, transfer and obtain funds to boost their agribusiness and foster financial supports as well. This will help support efforts made by these highly valued groups that produce more than 50 percent of the local staple foods we consume daily.

Teachers should encourage students to study agriculture related subjects and engage in practicals. This will enhance sustainable agricultural development and home gardening/farming as well. Home gardening has been reported to be responsible for over 80 percent of staple foods produced and marketed daily in most developed countries we admire today. These countries support individuals to engage in farming because they know the imports of such agricultural activities even on foreign exchange earnings.

Higher institutions and research institutes should engage in development-based researches to enhance innovations and products development to meet socio-economic needs (hunger, poverty, and joblessness) and solve limiting problems.

Churches, NGOs and Cooperatives can organize trainings and other supports to encourage awareness and capacity development programmes for members. A lot of jobless folks can see opportunities and spring up from there while others can improve on or add value to what they are already doing to enhance markets and increase income.

Government should put flexible policies in place to encourage farmers. Politicians can invest in developing their restive youths and engage them productively at the grass root levels.

A lot can be done to boost agricultural development in Nigeria especially, in the area of making cheap foods available, creating jobs and reducing importation of agro-products. Industries will spring up when raw material are made available. Young people will get involved if agribusiness is made attractive. Value addition is very important in agriculture, it enhance market for products. It takes creativity, innovative researches, capacity development and  modern technology duly put in place.

Discovering yourself

A capacity building programme was organized by Dr. Blessing to empower teenagers for self-awareness and self-management in order to fast-track self-development and competence in life and academic/career pursuit.

Dr. Blessing says, "life is a seed, whatever you put in, that you will get". Every man has got a level of abilities and talents naturally embedded in him (or her) by God. Notwithstanding, those talents need fine-tuning, those skills need sharpening, those abilities need enhancement. A raw cassava makes no dietary sense until it is processed into whatever product the user desires - farina, flour, starch or tapioca. As a matter of fact, the raw state is poisonous, consumption prior to processing can be life threatening.
Before one can talk about enhancing capacity or acquiring a skill, the first step is to discover what he has natural ability or flare for; he needs to discover himself, what his strengths and weaknesses are and what he has passion for. It is expedient. The reason why a lot of people are not productive is simply because, they engage in activities - jobs and businesses they have no passion for, they only try to survive, earn a living and manage whatever they could lay their hands - this is not the best. Young people need to start on time to chart their course with their purpose road maps in place. They need to know on time what they want to be in life and get adequate guidance. The moment one discovers his purpose and flare in life, he heads on developing himself to be competitive and stand very relevant in his time. He needs to occupy his rightful niche in this world, bring about change and make a huge difference standing out because his is aware of who he is. Self-awareness is quite an indispensable aspect of capacity building, it seems the first rung on the ladder of life.
Life is all about relationships - vertical or horizontal, which ever way, a CEO can not operate effectively without a secretary who in turn needs a messenger or other administrative staff. Personality differences impact job performances, passion at work, innovative/creative abilities, team building and patriotic commitment to service (especially when political). Developing oneself includes, strengthening one's weaknesses and building on one's strengths. Adjusting these personality traits positively, fine-tunes one's behaviour and attitude to life for better and effective relationships and performances (even team performance). The young people need to be aware of these components of successful living and  career accomplishment.

Discipline: Indispensable for successful living (career)

"He'll not get anywhere with himself, he's got no discipline!"
This is an example cited in the oxford advanced learner's dictionary where it defined DISCIPLINE.
Dr. Mrs. Blessing Okogbue had a talk with the youth of the Higher Ground Chapel of the RCCG, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State on the 2nd of June, 2014. She spoke to the youth as a mentor, advising them to imbibe discipline as a way of life, if they want to go far in life and in an insurmountable speed.
